Hey guys! Welcome to the first ever Witchcraft Wednesday.
Witchcraft Wednesday’s is all about sharing with you my knowledge of common tools used in spiritual practices.
That was pretty simple to explain. Let’s get right into it!
This week’s topic covers: Sage!
What the Fuck is Sage?
Salvia Apiana or white sage is an evergreen perennial whose habitat can be found in Southern California and Baja California. The act of burning sage was introduced by Native Americans. The native’s used the process of burning sage for many of the uses listed below. Out of respect, it is good etiquette to purchase sage from Native American gathers, whenever possible, if you are using sage as a part of your spiritual practice. Give thanks!
When do you use Sage?
This antimicrobial plant is used to clear yourself and your space of stifling, blocked, or negative energies.
Some examples of when to use sage are:
- Moving into a new home or office
- To perform an energy reset
- Release negativity
- Purify the air
- Relieve allergy symptoms
- Improve your mood
- Insect repellant
- Strengthen intuition
How do you use Sage?
Before you light your sage stick, it is good practice to lay out the spiritual tools you will use for your ritual. This can be crystals, talismans, pictures of your spirit guide, if you have them, or an item that you associate with your spirit guide.
Once you have your space organized, turn off and remove all distractions. This also includes pets or children. Some people play mediation music during the process of sage clearing while others opt for silence. The decision is yours to make as this is your ritual. The key here is to have only those things that make you feel closer to spirit, operating during your cleansing period.
Next, it is good practice to set intentions for the cleanse. You can say aloud, or think things like, “I want to release negativity during this cleanse.” or “I want to drive away anxious thoughts.” or I want to clear blockages from my crown chakra.” There are no wrong intentions to set as long as they are authentic to you. If you are having trouble coming up with intentions try to think of three reasons you decided to look into sage clearing. What thought made you decide to get in your car and drive to the store to buy it. If you already have it in your home, what made you want to pick it up and perform the ritual today? These are your intentions.
Now that your ritual space is set up, you’ve opened a window, you’ve set the mood, and you’ve set your intentions, it is time to light the sage and begin your ritual.
To clear or reset energies in your body and remove blockages:
- Open a window or door. The purpose of performing a sage cleanse is to rid yourself and your space of unwanted energies. The energies have to go someone once they have been released from yourself or your space or else they linger and hide in areas not touched by the smoke. You want to drive these energies completely from your space.
- Light the end of your sage bundle and blow out the flames. This produces a thick dense cloud of smoke.
- Aim the smoke towards your body and concentrate on the areas of blockage or negative energy.
- Think or say aloud your intentions. Repeat your intentions as many times as you feel you need to, or until you feel the blockage or energy has been cleansed.
- Use a bowl or shell to collect the ashes of the sage stick. (This can be used later to make black salt, we’ll get into what that is, in a later post.)
- Once you have cleared your space, or self, gently stub out the lit end of your sage stick in a bowl. I recommend using a bowl made of a natural material like glass, metal, or a shell.
What is the difference between Sage and Smudging?
Sage clearing is the act of burning sage while smudging, or smoke clearing, can be accomplished by using different types of herbs or materials. Things like incense, herbs, and plants, are used for smudging.
How do you cleanse your house with Sage?
To cleanse your home, office, or personal space of energy using sage, you will follow all of the steps above. But, instead of pointing the smoke towards your body, point the smoke away from you and into the space you are clearing. I always try to make sure I get corners and low spaces, just to be sure that energy is really out of the area.
How often should you Sage your house?
My personal opinion is that you should sage your space, or self, as often as you feel you need to! I usually try to sage about once a month unless my space feels clear and positive already. Don’t fix what’s not broken, right? Other times I may sage would be: after an argument, after someone with negative feeling energy has entered and left my space, to clear mental fog, when in the process of clearing blocked chakras, to set my space for more intensive spiritual work, like when I’m doing a tarot read, and to clear my spiritual tools.
The take away…
Burning sage has many health and spiritual benefits and can be used by anybody. There are some pretty intense videos, and some strong opinions about the use of sage being used to perform of witch craft. Don’t let that scare you away from using this wonderful tool as a way to bring you closer to Spirit, God, The Universe, or whatever you call your higher power. Sage is a tool like any other. If you use it for good and see benefit from it, use it. If not, maybe smudging is more your speed. If the whole thing turns you off all together, I’m a little confused on why you clicked on this post lol.
