Hey guys! Welcome back to Witchcraft Wednesday.
Witchcraft Wednesday’s is all about sharing with you my knowledge of common tools used in spiritual practices.
That was pretty simple to explain. Let’s get right into it!
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC COVERS: Candle magic.

What the fuck is candle magic?
Candle magic has a long history and has touched every religion, past and present. Some see candle magic as a taboo practice until they come to understand that all religions, from Paganism to Christianity, practice candle magic every single day. Candle magic is an inexpensive way to harness your energy, focus your attention, and breathe energy into your manifestations. You may be surprised to learn that you have already used candle magic before. Remember those candles on your birthday cake when you were a kid? Make a wish, blow out the candles. Yep! You guessed it, your meemaw, parents, cousins, and friends taught you, encouraged you, and witnessed you using candle magic.
When the fuck do you use candle magic?
In my experience, candle magic is best used for manifesting fast results. Much like the flame, the energy harvested when using candle magic will burn bright and quick, but without anything to keep the flame going, the energy used to fuel your manifestation will extinguish quickly.
Candle magic is particularly useful for spellwork involving love, healing, enlightenment, and protection.
Again, candle magic is best used for fast magic; results that you want to see quickly. If you want something with duration, it would probably be best to use a different form of magic.
Candle magic is also great to use in divination, astral projection, and for communicating with spirits.
What the fuck are the types of candles used in candle magic?

There are many different types of candles that can be used in candle magic. The type of candle you choose should reflect the intensity and the expected duration of the candle’s magic that you want to experience.
From tealight candles, which burn for approximately 3 hours, to vigil candles that can burn for 7 days, the choice of candle and color should:
- Be safe to use with the time you have available. Don’t burn a 7-day candle and leave it unattended. It would be best to leave that particular type of work for a time when you can be present and watch over it. In the event you need to extinguish a flame, do not blow the flame out. You can snuff the flame out or smother it, but try to refrain from blowing it out as it scatters your intentions and can be seen as a sign of disrespect to certain spirits you may work with.
- Be personally meaningful to you.
- Take color into account. While you have the freedom to choose any color candle you resonate with, certain candles are known to bring more concentration to your manifestations. This is why you are probably used to seeing the church only ever burn white candles. White candles are good for protection and to usher in enlightenment.
- Be in alignment with your intuition. Sometimes, using our physical sight won’t account for all of the nuances of the spellwork you are trying to create. You may see a color or size candle that you resonate with on sight, but your intuition may pull you in a different direction. When in doubt, follow your intuition.
How do you perform candle magic?
The process is much the same as when you used to make wishes when you blew out the candles on your birthday cake. But instead of making a wish, you will be setting an intention to direct the energy of the candle towards your desired result. To perform candle magic:
- Figure out what you want to manifest using candle magic.
- Find the candle of appropriate size and color to support your spellwork.
- Clean your workspace or altar by smudging, using water and a clean cloth, or with Florida water.
- Cleanse your candle with palo santo, sage, or incense.
- Charge your candle with your intention. You can do this by simply meditating on your intention while handling the candle, or you can be more elaborate and combine meditation with the carving of sigils, initials, dates, or any other dressing you prefer to use.
- Consecrate your candle. You do this by anointing the candle with oil while stating “As above, so below”. You can use any affirmation at this step and call on any deities or ancestors you wish to assist you with blessing your candle.
- Once your candle is blessed, it is ready to be worked with.
The practice you decide to use from this point depends entirely on you. I know some people who write their intentions on bay leaves and place the leaves under the candle before lighting the candle. Some people write their intentions on a strip of paper, then burn the paper in the candle’s flame at certain points in their ritual. Some people do nothing more than burn the candle and chant their intention “X” amount of times and then leave it to burn out.
Candle magic like all other forms of magic, is personal to the person performing the ceremony. What is most important during every practice is to set your intentions, know the nature of any spirits you are calling to help you manifest, and be respectful of the laws of nature and free will in your practice.
What the fuck else is there to know about candle magic?
One last thing. If you are performing candle magic and the flame goes out on its own, do not relight the candle. This could be a sign from your spirit team that the spell is not appropriate or necessary for your request. I’d suggest you go back to the drawing board with your intentions. Meditate on your desired outcome and check in with your spirit team to guide you to a spell or better-suited intention, then start the entire process again with a new candle.
This is in no way an exhaustive list of all the do’s and don’ts of candle magic. If the introductory information I have presented to you has piqued your interest in the practice, I encourage you to learn as much as you can before you attempt to practice on your own.
Well Folks! That’s it. That’s all I’ve got for you about candle magic. Come back next week to see what I have in store for you.
