Self Care Sunday: Sun!

Happy Sunday Everyone!

I hope your Saturday’s were filled with love and light, and I hope your Sunday will be filled with positivity and renewal energy.

Before we begin, can we take minute to appreciate mother sun shining brilliantly into my apartment this morning? She is truly showing out today!

Okay, okay. We’ve marveled at her beauty, and now it’s time to get into it.

One of the most important things I feel that you can do, on your journey of self discovery is to reconnect with nature and recharge yourself with the energy of the sun. We spend so much of our lives indoors and away from the natural healing powers of nature, at times we forget just how powerful and restorative her energy can be.

During my journey, I spend a lot of time inside. I’m inside my thoughts, inside my hopes, inside my expectations, inside my feelings. All of that being inside often leads me to want to rush home at the end of the day and bury myself inside my apartment. Being inside is a form of isolation for me that often leads to the depressive state that I try so hard to avoid.

When I recognize this behavior, I know that it is time to get myself outside. It doesn’t matter where I am, or what I am doing at the moment. I pack my stuff and head out in search of the sun. Some days, this means going to the roof of the parking garage on my lunch break, sometimes, it’s visiting a favorite park or lake, and sometimes I simply sit on my patio and soak it all in. Not only does the sun boost my mood instantly and recharge me, it also covers me in warmth and reminds me I am loved, protected, and supported.

If you find yourself isolating in an unhealthy way the easiest and fastest way to get grounded is to go outside and soak up some sun. Safely, of course.

Benefits of the sun:

  • Reduces stress
  • Can aid in weight management
  • Helps keep depression at bay
  • Instant mood improvement
  • Aids in finding clarity
  • Calming
  • Helps with bone strength
  • Increases serotonin levels (the happy drug your brain naturally produces)
  • Helps to clear away negative thought patterns
  • Encourages feelings of gratitude

And the list goes on…

If you think about it, a lot of the best things are often described with attributes of the sun. Such as, she has a sunny disposition, shine like the sun, she is warm like the sun, the sun shines through her essence, etc. I’d like to think this is because of the enormous unparalleled energy of her presence, and the comfort we all find in her company.

I’d like to issue a challenge because I know how powerful her benefits are. It is a beautiful day outside for most of us and the sun is beckoning us to come and join her. She is freely offering up her energy to us to bring us back to center and bathe us in her love.

The challenge:

Spend at least 30 minutes in the sun every day doing nothing. Just sit, and allow your thoughts to play for ten minutes, then silence the distractions and be present with her. There’s no time like the present so let’s start today.

I’d love to hear about the ways the sun has a positive impact on your mental and spiritual health. I look forward to reading your comments below.

Happy Sunday guys! Catch me outside, how bout dat?
